Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Tricalysia

Characteristics

Leaves not dimorphic, blades 7.3–17.5 × 3–6.5(9.5) cm, broadly elliptic, elliptic or sometimes oblong-elliptic or obovate (ovate outside the Flora Zambesiaca area), obtuse or more often subacuminate to acuminate (up to 2 cm long) at the apex, cuneate to broadly cuneate at base (rounded outside the Flora Zambesiaca area), drying pale olive-green, coriaceous, recurved at margins, glabrous; midrib impressed above, prominent beneath, (outside the Flora Zambesiaca area sometimes puberulous); lateral nerves in 5–7 main pairs, distinct or indistinct; tertiary nerves obscure; domatia absent or present as shallow pubescent pits; petioles 5–15 mm long, glabrous or puberulous; stipule limbs 1–2 mm long, triangular or triangular-truncate, puberulous or mostly glabrous outside; arista 0.5–2 mm long, glabrous or pubescent.
More
Inflorescences subtended by leaves or infrequently borne at naked nodes (mostly in fruiting stage), 1–8-flowered; peduncles 0.5–1 mm long; intermediate inflorescence branches mostly present; single-flowered inflorescence branches 0.5–3.5(5) mm long, or 3–4 mm long in fruit, glabrous or puberulous; bract and bracteoles cupular, c. 1 mm long with 2 short lobes, more strongly developed in the intermediate ones, glabrous or puberulous, ciliate.
Anthers sessile or on filaments up to 2 mm long, inframedifixed, 5–6.5 mm long, shortly apiculate, glabrous, partly included or mostly exserted; style variable in length, glabrous; pollen presenter lobes held between the anthers or clearly above or well above them; ovules 2–4 per placenta.
Calyx tube almost entirely surrounded by bracteolar cup, glabrous or puberulous; limb-tube c. 2 mm long, gradually widening towards top, glabrous or puberulous, with silky hairs and colleters inside, truncate or repand; lobes ± absent or c. 0.25(0.5) mm long.
Corolla white; tube 12–20 mm long, widened towards top, 2–5(6) mm across at top, glabrous outside or sometimes with a few hairs towards top, glabrous inside; lobes 6.5–11 × 2.3–5 mm, acute or obtuse, glabrous, often ciliate towards tip.
Shrub or tree 0.75–9 m tall; young stems puberulous or glabrous (puberulous-pubescent outside the Flora Zambesiaca area); older stems with tan, brown or buff-coloured bark, at first smooth but later fissured.
Fruit red, c. 10 × 7 mm long, ellipsoid and distinctly narrowed at apex and base, or c. 7 mm in diameter and globose, crowned by persistent calyx limb.
Seeds 1–3 per locule, c. 7 mm long, ellipsoid, with linear hilar groove.
Flowers 6–7-merous, sweet-scented, subsessile.
