Characteristics

Shrub or rarely a small tree 1.5–2.5 m. high; young twigs glabrous.. Leaf-blades elliptic, more rarely ovate or obovate, (5–)8–16 cm. long, (2–)–3–6.5 cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, cuneate or rarely ± rounded at base, sparsely pubescent when young, later entirely glabrous, subcoriaceous; 3–5(–7) pairs of main lateral nerves; pocket-domatia tufted; petiole 5–10 mm. long, glabrous or with 2 lateral rows of hairs; stipules sheathing, ± 1.5 mm. long, with awns 1–2 mm. long.. Flowers 6-merous, subsessile (but stalk elongating in fruit), in 3–several-flowered sessile inflorescences; bracts and bracteoles cupular, truncate or 2-apiculate, pubescent.. Calyx-tube glabrous; limb cupular, 2 mm. long, showing deep longitudinal splits when the flower opens, pubescent outside.. Corolla white, glabrous outside; tube 3.5 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, the upper half with sparse long hairs within; lobes 6.5 mm. long, 2.25 mm. wide, acute.. Filaments 1.5 mm. long; anthers 3.5 mm. long, shortly apiculate, glabrous.. Placenta with 2 collateral ovules; style glabrous, ± 10 mm. long including ± 2 mm. long lobes.. Fruit red, ± spherical, ± 8 mm. in diameter, borne on long and slender pedicels (elongated in fruiting stage only, developed above the bracteolar cup) up to 30 mm. long.. Seeds 1 or 2 in each chamber, 1/2-or 1/4-spherical; hilum oblong, wide; seed-coat ± smooth.
