Characteristics

Tree or small shrub up to 11 m. high, with puberulous young twigs.. Leaf-blades narrowly elliptic or narrowly obovate, 5–13 cm. long, 1.5–3.5(–5) cm. wide, rounded, acute or acuminate at tip (the midnerve protruding in a minute mucro less than 1 mm.), cuneate at base, glabrous except the puberulous midrib above and pubescent underneath, papyraceous or subcoriaceous; (5–)7–8(–10) pairs of main lateral nerves; domatia hairy, sometimes very weakly pitted (the hairs then arranged around the pit); petiole 3–5 mm. long, puberulous; stipules sheathing, ± 1 mm. long, with awns 3–6 mm. long.. Flowers 4–6-merous, subsessile, in 1–5-flowered sessile inflorescences; bracts and bracteoles cupular, 2-or 4-apiculate, pubescent.. Calyx-tube glabrous; limb tubular, 1.5 mm. long, shortly dentate, pubescent.. Corolla of unknown colour; tube 4–6 mm. long, 1.5–2.5 mm. wide, glabrous or sometimes with very few hairs inside; lobes 5–7 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide, acute (and sometimes laterally emarginate also) at tip, pubescent outside.. Filaments flattened, 1.5–2.5 mm. long; anthers 4 mm. long, obtuse or shortly appendiculate at tip, glabrous or with few hairs near tip.. Placenta with 2–4 ovules; style glabrous or with very few hairs, 4–6 mm. long, bearing 2 slender and hairy arms of ± the same length.. Fruit red, spherical, ± 7 mm. in diameter.. Seeds 1–3 in each chamber, angular at the inner side; hilum curved; seed-coat minutely striate.
