Perennial, from a short rhizome; culms 30–80 cm. high, slender, somewhat woody, stiffly erect or ascending, the internodes shorter than the leaf-sheaths which cover the nodes.. Leaf-blades linear-lanceolate, 3–8 cm. long, 3–10 mm. wide, ± reflexed.. Panicle lanceolate, 6–30 cm. long.. Spikelets 3–6 mm. long, glabrous, pilose with soft tubercle-based hairs, or with a tuft of short hairs at the tip of the lower glume only; upper lemma 2–3 mm. long, glabrous or sparsely pilose, the lateral tufts short, reaching to about the base of the awn; central awn 8–11 mm. long, the laterals 1.5–3 mm. long.
