Characteristics

Dioecious lianes, shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate; leaflets petiolulate. Flowers in many-flowered panicles, ♀ inflorescences usually shorter and with thicker axis than ♂. Calyx shortly cupuliform, with 4(–5) triangular-ovate lobes, valvate in bud. Petals 4(–5), spreading, later reflexed, valvate, those of ♀ slightly larger. Stamens 4(–5), smaller and sterile in ♀; filaments filiform; anthers dorsifixed. Disk cupuliform, ferruginous hirsute or glabrous. Ovary ovoid, unilocular, 1-ovulate; styles 3(–4), usually reflexed or sometimes spreading to rarely suberect, close together or slightly united at the base, with sessile 2-lobed stigmas. Drupe ovoid, turbinate or subglobose, appressed-setulose or glabrous; exocarp and mesocarp somewhat fleshy; endocarp thin, coriaceous or crustaceous. Seed ovoid with very thick cotyledons.
