Prostrate, ascending or erect perennial herb or small shrub 0.25–2 m tall. Stems 4-ribbed, glabrous, weakly pilose or scabrous. Leaves opposite, becoming alternate above, sessile, broadly lanceolate, linear or oblanceolate, entire or serrate, glabrous or pilose. Bracts lanceolate, 2.5–8 mm long, usually entire, green; bracteoles lanceolate, 0.3–0.7 mm long, entire or weakly toothed, brown. Flowers 3-merous, solitary or in fascicles of usually 3–5 in axils of bracts; pedicel 1–5 mm long. Sepals deltoid, 0.3–0.6 mm long, smooth, green. Petals 1.7–2.5 mm long, green to cream. Stamens 6; anthers 1.5–1.7 mm long. Ovary green, somewhat trigonous. Fruit trigonous, 1–1.7 mm long, weakly and irregularly rugose, 1-locular at apex, more or less 3-locular at base, septa membranous.
