Densely tufted perennial; culms 23–50 cm. high, slender and weak, far exceeding the leaves, sinuous and drooping (erect only when young).. Leaf-blades filiform, normally folded or convolute, 5.5–11 cm. long, 1–2 mm. wide when flattened, glabrous or very scattered pilose above, flexible, curling and becoming intertangled.. Spikes 5–15 cm. long, slender, straight or slightly curved, almost always drooping.. Spikelets 5–12-flowered, narrowly oblong, 12–20 mm. long, distant in the lower part of the spike, slightly overlapping above, dull green; glumes 1-nerved, unequal, acute or obtuse and mucronate, lower glume lanceolate, 3–4.7 mm. long, slightly asymmetric, upper glume narrowly oblong, 4.2–6 mm. long; lemmas elliptic-oblong, 3.5–5.2 mm. long, firmly membranous, rounded on the back, the tip 2-toothed, awned from between the teeth, the lateral nerves excurrent 0.2–0.8 mm.; awn 3.3–6 mm. long, usually straight; anthers 2, 0.5–0.75 mm. long; callus laterally appressed villous..
