Tufted perennial; culms 10–65 cm. high, slender, stiffly erect.. Leaf-blades filiform, convolute, 3–20 cm. long, ± 1 mm. wide when flattened, glabrous, keeled and scabrid on both edges towards the tip.. Spikes 5–23 cm. long, linear to very narrowly oblong, erect, ± straight, somewhat rigid.. Spikelets 8–19-flowered, linear-oblong, 9–20 mm. long, closely overlapping by more than half their length, dull green and often purple tinged; glumes 1-nerved, unequal, lower glume lanceolate, 2.6–3.2 mm. long, conspicuously asymmetric, acute, upper glume elliptic-oblong, 3.2–3.8 mm. long, subacute or obtuse; lemmas broadly elliptic-oblong to ovate, 3–4.4 mm. long, rounded or slightly keeled on the back, the tip bluntly 2-toothed to subentire, awned from between the teeth, the lateral nerves usually excurrent into short mucros; awn up to 1.3 mm. long, straight; anthers 3, 1.1–1.5 mm. long; callus shortly appressed villous on the back, the hairs longer laterally.. Caryopsis narrowly oblong, ±1.7 mm. long, obtusely trigonous in cross-section.
