Leaf-blades filiform, usually folded or involute, rarely flat, 1–11 cm. long, up to 0.9 mm. wide when flattened, glabrous or the upper surface scattered-pilose, tapering to a finely pointed tip.. Spikes 2–11 cm. long, slender and sometimes feathery, erect, straight or slightly flexuous.. Spikelets 7–19-flowered, narrowly oblong, 4.2–11 mm. long, overlapping by up to two-thirds their length, pale green often tinged with purple; glumes thinly membranous, variable in shape, lower glume 0.8–2.2 mm. long, 1-nerved, linear-lanceolate to oblong and broadened below on one side, truncate and mucronate to acuminate, upper glume 1.6–3.8 mm. long, usually 1-nerved, rarely 3-nerved, narrowly oblong, obtuse or truncate to acuminate; lemmas broadly oblong, 1.1–2.4 mm. long, rounded on the back, thinly membranous, 2-toothed and awned, often with additional lobes between the teeth, lateral nerves excurrent 0.1–1.6 mm.; awn 0.8–2.5 mm. long, very fine; anthers 2, 0.2–0.5 mm. long; callus shortly appressed silky-hairy..
