Tufted perennial 500-750 mm high. Leaf blade to 250 x to 4 mm, conduplicate or expanded. Inflorescence 120-180 mm long, contracted, almost spike-like. Spikelet 12-18 mm long (excluding awns), usually loosely flowered; glumes unequal, narrowly lanceolate, acuminate; lower glume 1-nerved, glabrous, scaberulous along the nerve; upper glume 2/3 as long as spikelet, 3-nerved; rachilla internode 3.5-4.5 mm long, with hairs to 4 mm long; lemma linear-lanceolate, finely granular, nerves raised prominently; palea keels conspicuously hairy; anther 2.5 mm long.
