Characteristics

Caespitose. Culms to 45 (–60) cm high, 3 or 4-noded. Young shoots intravaginal. Leaves: blade 4–19 cm long, (1–) 1.5–2.5 (–4) mm wide, ±scaberulous. Panicles 4–10 (–20) cm long, open, axis and branches glabrous to antrorsely scaberulous-puberulous. Spikelets 5–7.5 mm long; pedicels to 5.5 mm long, antrorsely scaberulous-puberulous. Glumes with keel scaberulous (or antrorsely ciliolate) mainly towards apex: lower glume (2–) 3–4.6 mm long, acuminate or subulate, occasionally setaceous, 1 or 3-nerved; upper glume narrowly elliptic-lanceolate, (4–) 4.5–6 mm long, acute to acuminate-aristate, occasionally setaceous, 3-nerved. Lemma 4–6 mm long, acute or 2-toothed; (3 or) 5-nerved, with midnerve scaberulous mainly towards apex; awn 1, arising from within upper 1/4–1/2 of lemma back, 4.5–9 mm long, usually geniculate or curved, with column usually twisted. Anthers 1.5–2.5 mm long.
