Densely tufted perennial; culms 30–150 cm. high; basal leaf-sheaths ± silky pubescent.. Leaf-blades flat or involute, 5–30 cm. long, 2–4 mm. wide.. Inflorescence a raceme 4–20 cm. long, bearing 1–8 subsessile triads appressed to the rhachis; pedicels of each triad connate, 3 mm. long.. Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 22–37 mm. long, pale yellow or yellowish brown, pilose from rows of black tubercles; lower glume narrowly lanceolate, 2/3 as long as the spikelet; upper glume very narrowly lanceolate, about as long as the spikelet, the lower lemma a little longer; upper lemma 10–12 mm. long, glabrous, acutely bilobed; awn 5–16 cm. long; callus 4 mm. long, pallidly pubescent.. Caryopsis hairy on top.
