Spikelets narrowly lanceolate, 20–33 mm. long, yellowish, the lower glume pilose from dark purplish tubercles; lower glume narrowly lanceolate, 1/2-2/3 as long as the spikelet; upper glume very narrowly lanceolate, as long as the spikelet, the lower lemma 1/3–1/2 as long; upper lemma turbinate at maturity, 7 mm. long, densely pilose from vertical lines of rufescent hairs, bidentate, the teeth drawn out into bristles 5–10 mm. long; central awn 3.5–6.5 cm. long, deciduous above the sinus; callus 1–1.5 mm. long.. Caryopsis hairy on top.
