Characteristics

Aerial stem-parasitic shrubs, mostly glabrous, robust, with epicortical runners bear-ing secondary haustoria. Leaves alternate, opposite or verticillate. Inflorescence a robust many-flowered raceme or spike; axis with a non-flowerbearing part at the base or apex; bract single under each flower, simple. Corolla 6-merous, strongly gamopetalous, thick and woody, regular or slightly zygomorphic with the tube curved prior to anthesis, more or less deeply split on the inner side of the curve. Anthers basifixed, immobile. Style simple, with a knob-like stigma. Fruit ellipsoid to obovoid. Fig. 45. Fig. 46. Fig. 47.
