Characteristics

Minute tufted annual to 1 cm diam. Leaves 5-7 mm long, to 0.4 mm wide. Capitula sessile, crowded among leaves; bracts 2, erect, lanceolate, acute, similar to leaves but 2-3 mm long with scarious dilated bases up to 1.2 mm wide. Male flowers 1 or 2 per capitulum; anther oblong, c. 0.5 mm long, purple, persistent; filament to 2.5 mm long. Female flowers 5-10, loosely grouped in capitulum; stigmatic hairs 2-5, c. 2 mm long, caducous. Fruit ovoid-trigonous, c. 0.5 mm long, disintegrating when ripe, whitish-stramineous, subhyaline between the 3 opaque ribs. Seed honeycombed, 0.4 mm long, opaque, brown.
