Characteristics

Annual or perennial herbs, aquatic to subaquatic, sometimes becoming red-tinted. Leaves linear and flattened or filiform and terete. Capitula scapose, usually homogamous; male capitulum with 4-10 flowers; female capitulum with 8-20 flowers; bracts 2-4, lanceolate, erect, sheathing. Male flower: anther linear to oblong, caducous after dehiscence; filament at first erect, becoming lax and flexuose. Female flower: ovary terete, ovoid to pyriform; stigmatic hairs 4-10, caducous, attached to a persistent boss on apex of ovary. Fruit terete, indehiscent, smooth or wrinkled, with 2 or 3 obscure vascular bundles never forming ribs. Seed smooth.
