Characteristics

Plants 150-300(-350) mm high. Corm subglobose, 10-20 mm diam.; tunics of fine-textured or wiry fibres forming flattened claws at base. Stem flexed outward above uppermost sheath then suberect, unbranched or 1-or 2-branched from near base. Leaves 4 to 8, lanceolate, suberect or spreading in a wide fan, usually < 1/2 as long as stem, 40-100(-150) x (2-)5-10 mm, acute, main vein moderately thickened, sometimes with slightly prominent submarginal vein, margins slightly thickened and hyaline, uppermost cauline leaf membranous and sheathing, bract-like, exserted or concealed by uppermost foliage leaf. Spike suberect or inclined, moderately lax, subsecund, 2-to 8-flowered; bracts dry-membranous, translucent flushed brown and speckled in upper 1/2, outer 6-12 mm long, obtuse and 3-toothed or irregularly toothed, inner ± as long, shortly bifid. Flowers zygomorphic, bright or paler yellow, sometimes tinged apricot, unscented; perianth tube slender and subcylindric widening distally and funnel-shaped, (18-)20-28 mm long, lower cylindric part 12-25 mm long, widening above to 6-8 mm diam.; tepals obovate, dorsal larger, slightly hooded over anthers, often paler inside, upper laterals spreading and lower deflexed, upper tepals 10-15(-20) x 7-15 mm, lower tepals (10-)12-15 x 5-8 mm, each with a quadrate yellow callus 2-4 mm high near base. Filaments unilateral and arcuate, 7-10 mm long, not or shortly exserted; anthers 4-6 mm long, often curved, brown or yellow. Style dividing opposite anthers, branches 3-5 mm long. Capsules subglobose, ± 6 mm long.
