Characteristics

Plants (100-)200-450(-600) mm high. Corm subglobose, 10-15 mm diam., with short or long stolons with terminal cormlet; tunics of fine-textured fibres. Stem suberect, unbranched or 1-or 2-branched from near base or middle. Leaves 4 to 8, lanceolate or narrowly lanceolate, suberect or sometimes spreading in a fan, ± 1/2 as long to as long as stem, (40-)80-150(-200) x 5-10(-12) mm, acute to acuminate, main vein moderately thickened, sometimes with slightly thickened submarginal vein ± 1 mm from edge, uppermost cauline leaf sheathing, leaf-like or membranous and bract-like, exserted or concealed by upper foliage leaf. Spike stiffly erect, moderately lax, subsecund, 6-to 15-flowered; bracts dry-membranous, translucent flushed brown and speckled in upper 1/2, outer 6-12(-18) mm long, 3-toothed or rarely 5-toothed or acute, inner ± as long as or slightly shorter, bifid. Flowers zygomorphic, salmon-pink, reddish orange or apricot-coloured with yellow throat and yellow spot on lower tepals surrounding callus; perianth tube obliquely funnel-shaped, 12-16 mm long, lower cylindric part 3-6 mm long, widening up to 6-8 mm diam.; tepals obovate, dorsal larger, slightly hooded over anthers, often paler inside, upper laterals spreading, lower tepals deflexed, upper tepals 10-15 x 8-12 mm, lower tepals 10-15 x 5-8 mm, each with a quadrate yellow callus 2-4 mm high near base. Filaments unilateral, arcuate, 12-15 mm long, exserted up to 6 mm; anthers 4-6 mm long, often curved, exserted, mauve. Style dividing opposite or beyond anthers, branches 2-4 mm long. Capsules ellipsoid, (12-)15-22 mm long, erect and appressed to axis.

Inflorescence a spike; flowers reddish to orange, bilabiate; throat with slender dark lines inside; perianth tube 12-16 mm long, tubular in lower half; tepals unequal in width, 12-15 mm long, dorsal erect and largest, lower with yellow, median, tooth-like callus. Stamens curved; filaments 12-15 mm long; anthers 4-6 mm long, contiguous, mauve or purple; pollen yellow. Style 18-22 mm long. Flowering time Mar.-July. Capsule ellipsoid, ± trigonous.
