Characteristics

Plants 200-350 mm high. Corm not seen. Stem flexed outward near base then suberect, simple or with up to 3 suberect branches. Leaves 5 to 7, linear to narrowly lanceolate or falcate, slightly succulent, 50-120 x 1.5-4.0 mm, acuminate, with translucent main vein and sometimes 1 additional vein, margins translucent, cauline leaves bract-like and often dry. Spike erect, nearly 2-ranked, rather lax to dense, 5-to 12-flowered; bracts green and leathery becoming dry and membranous above or entirely, brown and speckled dark brown at tips, outer 7-12 mm long, margins membranous, 2-or 3-toothed or subacute, inner subequal or slightly shorter, bifid. Flowers weakly zygomorphic, almost salver-shaped, mauve to violet, lower tepals pale creamy yellow in lower 1/2 with median purple blotch, unscented; perianth tube subcylindric, 28-42 mm long, widening gradually to 2 mm diam.; tepals subequal, spreading, elliptic to obovate, 8-12 x 3-5(-6) mm, lower tepals puberulous and each with small, obliquely peg-like callus 0.5-0.8 mm high. Filaments unilateral, arcuate, 6-8 mm long, exserted 3-5 mm; anthers 3-5 mm long, pale; pollen cream. Style 32-45 mm long, dividing between base and middle of anthers (or shortly below them), branches 1.5-2.0 mm long. Capsules subglobose, 6-10 mm long.
