Characteristics

Flowers orange or salmon-pink, zygomorphic, the 3 lower tepals each with a yellow basal mark outlined in red, the lowermost or all three with a small median callus; perianth tube (16)25–35(40) mm long, narrowly tubular, widened slightly near the apex; tepals ± unequal, (12)15–22 × 6–9 mm, oblong-lanceolate, the upper slightly wider erect and hooded.

Spike lax, subsecund, usually 8–10-flowered; outer bracts brownish above, scarious, papery, 6–12(15) mm long, 2–3-toothed or acute, finely veined; inner bracts similar, sometimes slightly shorter, 2-toothed.
Foliage leaves 6–9, mostly basal, 15–50 cm long, 4–8(11) mm wide, just exceeding the spike, linear-lanceolate, soft-textured; upper leaves cauline and smaller.
Corms 10–15 mm in diameter, sometimes with small cormlets on stolons; tunics of fine fibres.
Stamens unilateral and arcuate; filaments 12–16 mm long; anthers 6–7 mm long, yellow.
Style dividing near the anther apices, style branches c. 4 mm long.
Capsules coriaceous, 8–15 mm long, ellipsoid or turbinate.
Stem erect, simple or 1–3-branched.
