Characteristics

Plants mostly 250-350 mm high. Corm conical, 10-20(-30) mm diam.; tunics of fine-textured fibres, often extending upward in a fibrous or papery neck. Stem suberect or flexed outward, simple or with up to 3 branches. Leaves 5 to 8, suberect, lanceolate to sword-shaped, with long clasping base, (50-)100-200 x (5-)10-15(-25) mm, acute or acuminate, plane with prominent main vein, margins crisped to undulate and often ciliate, cauline leaves smaller and entirely sheathing. Spike suberect or inclined, secund-pectinate, densely 4-to 12-flowered; bracts dry and membranous, sometimes greenish below, upper margins dark reddish brown, outer (5-)7-12(-15) mm long, irregularly 3-toothed with median tooth smaller or slightly lacerate, upper margins crisped, inner ± equal or slightly shorter, bifid. Flowers zygomorphic, sometimes inverted, cream-coloured to pale yellow or shell-pink to bright or salmon-pink, lower tepals with a lozenge-shaped red or purple median marking sometimes with a yellow central stripe, unscented; perianth tube cylindric, (20-)40-60(-85) mm long, slightly curved, widening up to ± 7 mm diam.; tepals unequal, upper 3 largest, spreading, obovate-spathulate, (12-)15-20(-25) x 5-13 mm, lower 3 spreading, oblanceolate, 3-10 mm wide, without calluses. Filaments unilateral, arcuate, 8-12 mm long; anthers 3-6 mm long, purple. Style (32-)40-70(-85) mm long, dividing shortly below or above anther tips, branches 3-6 mm long. Capsules shortly ellipsoid, ± 7 mm long.
