Characteristics

Leaf-lamina up to 11 × 14 cm., subcircular or oblate in outline, deeply 3–9-lobed or some branches with narrowly elliptic undivided leaves; lobes 8 × 2 cm., narrowly elliptic, apex acute, margin serrate, green and rugose above, densely and shortly white-tomentose below, nerves and veins prominent below, reticulate; petiole up to 7 cm. long; stipules up to 2 × 0·6 cm., persistent, oblong-lanceolate, acute at the apex, densely and shortly tomentose.

Inflorescences of dense, terminal or leaf-opposed, leafless cymes; peduncles up to 1 cm. long, densely stellate-tomentose; pedicels similar, up to 4 mm. long; bracts caducous, oblong-elliptic, apex acute, entire or 1–2-dentate, shortly and densely grey-tomentose on both sides.
Fruit up to 3 cm. in diam. including the aculei, globose, woody, indehiscent; aculei c. 3·5 mm. long, very numerous, collected into conical fascicles, minutely stellate-tomentose.
Petals yellow, clawed; blade 7 × 9 mm., circular or oblate, rounded at the apex; claw c. 5 mm, long, tomentose at the base.
Flower-buds cylindric, widened below, densely golden-tomentose outside, crowned with apical horns up to 4 mm. long.
Shrub or small tree up to 4 m. tall; young branches with a dense tufted golden-stellate tomentum.
Androgynophore 1 mm. long, with 5 reniform glands; annulus undulate and ciliate at the margin.
Sepals up to 2 × 0·3 cm., linear, widened below, apex acuminate, glabrous within.
Ovary globose, villous, 5–7-locular; stylec.13 mm. long.
