Characteristics

Many-stemmed shrub 0.6–5 m tall; stems 4–6 mm thick, erect, brown, abrasive, with scattered, easily detached stellate hairs.. Basal leaves triangular in outline, 6.5–7 cm long, 9–12 cm wide, 3(–5 when pedatifid)-lobed, divided by 8/10(–9/10), segments ovate-elliptic, 4.5–6 cm long, 2.5–3.5 cm wide, tip rounded to acute, margin slightly serrate to serrate, strongly stellate-scabrid above, subscabrid-tomentose beneath; leaves on flowering lateral branches shallowly 3-lobed or entire; petioles 4.2–6.2 cm long, 1 mm broad, indumentum as stem; stipules caducous, triangular-lanceolate, 6 mm long, 2.5 mm wide.. Inflorescences terminal with numerous lateral branches, cymes 1 per node, 1–3-flowered; peduncle 2.5–4 mm long, indumentum as stem; bracts 3–4, as stipules but 3–5 mm long; pedicels 0.5–3 mm long.. Sepals oblong-pandurate, 12–16 mm long, 2 mm wide, the exterior thickly covered in short stellate hairs, apical spur 0.5–1 mm long.. Petals narrowly spathulate, 12–13 mm long, 2.5 mm wide, the claw as long as the blade, with a dense tuft of hairs spreading laterally 1 mm from the base; stamens 27–31; ovary thinly covered with long hairs.. Fruits indehiscent, spherical, 5-locular, 34–47(–55) mm in diameter including bristles, the fruit body 8–9 mm in diameter, densely covered in long flexuose bristles, each 14–25 mm long, 0.25 mm wide, covered along their length with very short, relatively sparse, stellate hairs; bristle-tips glabrous.. Fig. 11/8–9 (p. 71).
More
Leaf-lamina 3–10 × 4–14 cm., palmately lobed to rather more than half-way, the base broadly cordate to truncate; lobes 3–5, 2–8 × 1–4 cm., oblong, acute at the apex, irregularly serrate, sparsely appressed-stellate-pilose and somewhat scabrid above, brownish-tomentose below, with raised nerves; petiole up to 8 cm. long, stellately ferruginous-tomentose.
Inflorescences terminal panicles or corymbs, of shortly pedunculate c. 10-flowered cymes; peduncles of cymes 1–5 mm. long, ferruginously scabrous-tomentose; pedicels similar, 1–3 mm. long, bracts 4–8 mm. long, lanceolate to subulate, setulose-pubescent and with a short appressed-stellate pubescence also.
Fruit up to 6·5 cm. in diam. including the aculei; aculei very numerous, subulate-filiform, softly stellate-pubescent and terminating in a fine long seta which is easily rubbed off and then apparently absent.
Sepals c. 10 mm. long, broadened at the base giving a swelling in the bud, linear above, appressed-stellately tomentellous outside; subapical horn c. 1 mm. long.
Petals orange-yellow, c. 10 mm. long, spathulate-oblong, rounded or truncate and serrate at the apex, narrowed to a falcate claw below, tomentose at the base.
Shrub or small tree up to c. 5 m. tall; branches rather thick and with a ferruginous tufted scabrous stellate tomentum.
Androgynophore 1–1·5 mm. long, with large closely spaced glands; annulus villous.
Ovary depressed-globose, villous, 3-locular.
Stamens c. 30, 10 mm. long.
