A poorly shaped, evergreen, understorey tree up to 21 m. tall (elsewhere up to 35 m. or more) with spreading crown and dense foliage; bole irregular, branched low down; bark grey or whitish, shallowly fissured, scaling in small pieces.. Leaves up to 60 cm. long; petiole flattened or grooved on upper surface, especially towards the base; leaflets oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate-oblong, 20–36, up to 22 × 4 cm., apex usually with a short acumen, base asymmetric; lateral nerves in 15–25 pairs, departing from the midrib at a very wide angle; lower surface soon becoming glabrous.. Flowers club-shaped in bud, in panicles up to 30 cm. long in leaf-axils and on older branchlets.. Calyx cupular, 5-toothed..
