Characteristics

Trees or treelets. Indumentum of simple hairs. Leaves pari-or imparipinnate. Flowers unisexual (plants dioecious). Calyx almost entire or shallowly or irregularly lobed. Petals 4–5(–6), valvate, fused (to the middle or beyond) to the staminal tube. Staminal tube cylindrical, slightly expanded at the mouth, margin crenate or shallowly lobed; anthers 8–12, in a single irregular whorl inserted within the throat of the staminal tube, completely included or partly exserted. Disk absent. Ovary 4–5-locular; locules with 2 superposed or oblique ovules; style-head discoid, with a slight central depression. Fruit a leathery, 3–5-valved, loculicidal capsule. Seeds with a fleshy aril.
