Characteristics

Rhizomatous herb; rhizome tuberous, creeping, to c. 12 cm long, c. 2 cm diam. Leaves several together; petiole to c. 40 cm long, sheathing in lower 1/3–2/3; blade hastate to deeply trifid with linear lobes; anterior lobe c. 10–20 × 2–8 cm; posterior lobes to c. 13 × 1.5–5 cm. Inflorescence among leaves; spathe to c. 22 cm long; lower spathe ovoid, separated from limb by a rather weak constriction; limb lanceolate, ±canoe-shaped, attenuate, purplish brown inside, greenish outside; spadix equalling spathe; female zone c. 1 cm long; sterile interstice 2–4 cm long with filiform neuter organs near female zone and more sparsely distributed shorter neuter organs extending up to male zone; male zone c. 1–1.5 × 0.7 cm; appendix sessile, narrowly tapering, c. 7–14 cm long, purplish black. Infructescence within persistent spathe base.
