Characteristics

Low much branched and densely foliate shrubs. Leaves opposite or subopposite, small. Peduncles axillary, 1-flowered. Flowers medium-sized, 4-or 5-merous. Sepals patent in the bud, longer than the imbricated petals. Petals firm. Stamens numerous, unequal; filaments straight or hardly curved even in the bud, short and flat; anthers basifixed, 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally, introrse. Ovary 3-to 5-celled; cells several-ovulate; placenta central. Berry several-seeded; seeds hippo-crepiform, with a hard and shining testa with a black spot at one side; embryo incurved; radicle elongate; cotyledons very short.

Petals (4)-5, ± connate at base, forming an almost globular cup, not caducous. Stamens 25 or more, included in corolla; filaments ± flattened or dilated, especially those in outer whorl; anthers ± sagittate, basifixed, immersed in the connective; connective dilated, fleshy, sometimes winged along margin, < style. Ovary 3-4-celled; ovules numerous. Fr. baccate; seeds usually 15-25.
