Perennial, rhizomatous (rhizomes stout, sometimes shortly creeping), up to 1 m high. Leaf blades 50-100 mm long, 6-12 mm wide. Basal sheaths very densely hairy, old sheaths splitting into fibres. Spikelets 3-5 mm long. Racemes 5-20, 30-100 mm long; spikelets lanceolate; lower glume 5-nerved; upper lemma with mucro 0.3-0.5 mm long.
Inferior glume 2/3–3/4 length of spikelet, lanceolate, 5–nerved, membranous to herbaceous, without a central tuft of bristles, narrowly obtuse to acute.
Inflorescence of 2–20 racemes, these bearing mostly paired spikelets on a subtriquetrous rhachis, the latter with or without sparse bristles.
Spikelets 3.5–6 mm. long, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, glabrous, pubescent or setosely fringed, acuminate.
Superior lemma granulose to rugulose, with a mucro 0.3–1 mm. long.
Tufted perennial, the base silky tomentose.
Culms 20–120 cm. high, ascending.
Leaf laminae broadly linear.
