Tufted perennial; culms 30–40 cm. high.. Leaf-blades narrowly lanceolate, 2–5 cm. long, 4–12 mm. wide, velvety pubescent.. Inflorescence of 2–5 racemes on a common axis 1–4 cm. long; racemes 1–3 cm. long, bearing paired spikelets on a triquetrous rhachis.. Spikelets broadly elliptic, 2.5–4 mm. long, acute to acuminate; lower glume cuff-like, up to 1/4 the length of the spikelet, truncate; upper glume and lower lemma thickly coriaceous, spinosely warty; lower palea with membranous centre flanked by coriaceous keels; upper lemma not much shorter than the lower, granulose, subacute, mucronulate (0.2 mm.).
