Spikelets broadly elliptic, 2.5–4 mm. long, acute to acuminate; lower glume cuff-like, up to 1/4 the length of the spikelet, truncate; upper glume and lower lemma thickly coriaceous, spinosely warty; lower palea with membranous centre flanked by coriaceous keels; upper lemma not much shorter than the lower, granulose, subacute, mucronulate (0.2 mm.).
