Spikelet 2.5-5.5 mm long, ovate; lower glume 2/3 as long as spikelet, 3-nerved, middle nerve with a tuft of 1-5 stiff hairs always present on the back and a 1/3 from apex, apex broadly rounded or truncate; upper glume 5-nerved, without cross-veins, glabrous or pubescent; lower lemma nearly always with a fringe of stiff hairs near the mar-gins; upper lemma granulose to rugulose, awn 0.5-1.0 mm long; anther 1.5-2.1 mm long.

Racemes 3-20, 10-140 mm long; spikelets ovate; lower glume two-thirds the spikelet length, 3-nerved, tip broadly rounded or truncate with a tuft of 1-5 stiff hairs on middle nerve, a third of the way from tip; upper lemma with mucro 0.5-1.0 mm long.
