Species

Angiosperms > Magnoliales > Annonaceae > Uvariopsis

Characteristics

Monoecious shrub or small tree 4–7(–12) m. tall, up to 0.7(–0.9) m. in girth; bark grey-green with brown patches, fissured; branchlets glabrous even when young.. Leaf-blades elliptic, oblong-elliptic or oblanceolate, 5.5–15 cm. long, 1.7–5.5(–7.5) cm. wide, obtuse or narrowly acuminate at the apex, cuneate or more rarely rounded at the base, not coriaceous, silky beneath when in young leaf-bud, later glabrous; lateral nerves 10–12, prominent above and beneath; reticulation of veins rather close, also prominent on both surfaces.. Flowers yellow, greenish-cream or yellowish-pink, solitary or rarely paired; bracteoles inserted near the base of the pedicels, semicircular, 1–1.5 mm. in diameter, adpressed pubescent; calyx bilobed; petals free, subequal, more or less fleshy.. Male flowers borne on leafy branches, axillary; pedicels 4–5 mm. long, adpressed pubescent; sepals almost round, 1–1.5 mm. in diameter, adpressed pubescent, glabrous; petals elliptic, 5–6 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, acute, glabrous inside, adpressed pubescent outside; stamens oblong, ±0.5 mm. long, the connectives not developed above the anther-cells.. Female flowers axillary on leafless branches or on the trunk; pedicels 0.6–1.1 cm. long, adpressed pubescent; sepals semicircular, 2 mm. long and wide, acute, adpressed pubescent outside, glabrous inside; petals ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, 0.5–1.1 cm. long, 3.5–5 mm. wide, pubescent; carpels subcylindric, 3–4 mm. long, 7–11-ovuled, densely pubescent; stigma ± 0.5 mm. wide.. Fruiting pedicels 1–1.5 cm. long, thick; monocarps red, 4–6, oblong-ellipsoid to cylindrical, 1.7–4.5 cm. long, 1.1–1.8 cm. wide, mostly pointed at the apex, 3–10-seeded, ± constricted between the seeds, sparsely pubescent or glabrescent; stipes 3–5 mm. long.. Seeds yellow-brown, ellipsoid or segment-shaped, 1–1.4 cm. long, 6–10 mm. wide, 4–6.5 mm. thick.. Fig. 17.
More
Male flowers on leafy shoots; pedicels 4–5 mm. long, appressed-pubescent; calyx bilobed, sepals 1–1.5 mm. long, semi-orbicular, appressed-pubescent outside; petals yellow or pale orange, free, ± fleshy, sub-equal, 5–6 mm. long, elliptic, acute, appressed-pubescent outside, glabrous within; stamens 0.5 mm. long, oblong, glabrous, connective not produced.
Leaves petiolate; lamina 7–15 x 2–4.5 (6) cm., narrowly elliptic to oblong or oblanceolate, obtuse or acute to acuminate at the apex, cuneate or rarely rounded at the base, membranous, bluish-green, concolorous, glabrous, with relatively loosely reticulate venation prominent on both sides; petiole 2–4 mm. long, glabrous or rarely sparsely pubescent.
Fruit on a pedicel 1–1.5 mm. long; fruiting carpels usually 4–6, several-seeded (1.2) 2.5–3.5 (4.8) x 1.2–1.8 cm., cylindric, not usually apiculate, ± deeply constricted between the seeds, sparsely pubescent or glabrescent, finely rugose, red, black when dry, with stipes 3–6 mm. long.
Female flowers on leafy or defoliated shoots or on the old wood; pedicels 6–11 mm. long; sepals c. 2 mm. long, subacute; petals 5–7 (9) mm. long, ovate; carpels numerous, densely pubescent, stigma black when dry, glabrous; otherwise similar to male flowers.
Flowers monoecious, solitary or rarely paired, axillary; bracteoles 2, semi-orbicular, appressed-pubescent, ± persistent, near base of pedicel.
Branches spreading, glabrous even when young.
