Dense low shrub 30– 240 cm high (to 4 m at low altitudes in Rwanda); young branches minutely puberulous with short simple hairs but soon glabrescent.. Leaves shiny green above, elliptic or slightly ovate, 1– 3.3(– 5.5) cm long, 0.5– 1.7(– 2.3) cm wide, base cuneate, margins minutely serrulate with ?glandular teeth, apex acute to very shortly acuminate, glabrous except for the puberulous petiole and the leaf-base which has few puberulous hairs.. Flowers 5– 15 together in upper-axillary and terminal racemes to 3.5 cm long at anthesis; axes usually glabrous, but occasionally puberulous in proximal parts; bracts ovate, 1– 2.2 mm long, to 1.4 mm wide, (to 5.5× 2.2 mm at fruiting stage), apex acute, margins cilate; pedicel 1.5– 3.5(– 9) mm long, glabrous, at fruiting stage to 6 mm long and becoming thicker near apex.. Calyx lobes green, sometimes tinged with red, ovate-triangular and ± 1 mm long, acute, glabrous.. Corolla white, pink or red, campanulate, 2.5– 4.2 mm long, 2.5– 5.5 mm in diameter at the mouth, connate for more than 3/4, lobes five, 1– 1.5 mm long, obtuse, with recurved margins, glabrous.. Stamens 10, filaments 0.6– 2 mm long, glabrous, anthers 1.1– 1.2 mm long, papillose, slightly urceolate at apex.. A low shrub. It grows up to 2-3 m tall. The young branches have small hairs. The leaves are a shiny green above. The leaves are narrowly oval and 1-5 cm long by 1-2 cm wide. The base is wedge shaped and the edges have small teeth. There are 5-15 flowers in a group near the ends of branches. The fruit are round and red but turn purple to black. They are 6-8 mm across.
