Characteristics

Annual, spreading-hirsute, branched at base, with prostrate or weakly ascending stems 0.5–4 dm; lvs 0.5–2 cm wide, mostly wider than long, palmately veined and most of them palmately 3–5-lobulate, the petiole to as long as the blade; lowest lvs opposite; floriferous part of the stem elongate, with alternate, well developed lvs, each with a single axillary fl, the short pedicel elongating to 5–15 mm in fr; sep strongly ciliate, ovate, truncate or subcordate at base, accrescent to 5–7 mm; cor pale bluish, 3–5 mm wide; style 0.6–1.0 mm; fr glabrous, 2.5–3.5 mm, slightly or scarcely notched, globose or broader than high; seeds 1 or 2 per locule, transversely rugose; 2n=56. Native of Europe, established in moist fields and waste ground from N.Y. to O., Ky., and S.C. Apr., May.

Prostrate, somewhat hairy, annual; stems slender, decumbent, much-branched, rooting from nodes; internodes with bifarious hairs. Petioles 5-15 mm long. Lamina to 1.6 × 1.8 cm, oblong, suborbicular to reniform, hairy or glabrate, entire on basal lvs, otherwise usually 3-lobed; lateral lobes often with a small basal lobe; middle lobe largest; base broad-cuneate to subcordate; apices of lobes ± obtuse. Fls solitary in lf axils; pedicels 5-20 mm long, much > calyx, with hairs in a longitudinal band. Calyx 3-5 mm long; lobes broadly ovate, long-ciliate, cordate at base, acute at apex. Corolla 3-4 mm diam., pale blue. Capsule 3-6 mm diam., suborbicular or orbicular, glabrous. Seeds ± reniform, deeply concave on 1 side, tranversely ribbed on convex side.

Flowers blue or mauve, single in leaf axils; pedicels not or somewhat longer than leaves. Calyx: lobes cordate-ovate, ciliate. Corolla up to 9 mm in diam. Fruit a ± globose capsule, ± 4 x 4 mm, lightly 4-lobed, glabrous.
