Characteristics

Perennial with a rootstock. Stem glabrous or slightly pubescent (pubescence is more evident in South Africa). Leaflets 3, 20-30 x 10-12 mm, acute to rounded at the apex, rounded at the base; petiole 1.7-4 cm long; rhachis 0.2-0.5 cm long; stipules 5-11 x 1-3.5 mm, peltate, multinerved. Peduncle 0.7-1.2 cm × 0.2-0.5 mm, glabrous; rhachis 1-noded. Flower 8-9 mm long; pedicel 0.5-1 mm long, not really expanding as the pod matures; bracteoles 1 mm long, 1-nerved. Calyx glabrous or pubescent; tube 2-4 mm long; lobes 1.5-3 mm long, lanceolate, ciliate, the lower slightly longer, the upper two almost not joined. Standard without appendages or with 2 parallel widely spaced weak appendages; keel without a beak, slightly twisted towards the left. Ovary 7-8-ovuled. Pod c. 3.5 cm × 2.5 mm, linear-cylindrical, glabrous, with a straight beak. Seed 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm; hilum excentric; aril excentric.
