Perennial herb, climber, 0.12-0.80 m high/long; roots tuberous with abundant nodules; stems delicate. Leaflets ovate to linear-oblong, 15-35 x 3-15 mm, base obtuse, apex subacute to rounded, petiolate. Stipules ribbed, extended with a spur beyond point of attachment, both ends often rounded. Inflorescences of solitary, axillary flowers; peduncles up to 100 mm long, slender; pedicels short. Flowers small. Petals: standard subrotund, 6-9 x 10 mm, scarcely repand; keel saccate on both sides of claw. Style prolongation horizontal, up to 0.2 mm long, hammer-shaped as a whole.
Leaflets 3, 20–30 × 10–12 mm, acute to rounded at the apex, rounded at the base; petiole 1.7–4 cm long; rhachis 0.2–0.5 cm long; stipules 5–11 × 1–3.5 mm, peltate, multinerved.
Calyx glabrous or pubescent; tube 2–4 mm long; lobes 1.5–3 mm long, lanceolate, ciliate, the lower slightly longer, the upper two almost not joined.
Standard without appendages or with 2 parallel widely spaced weak appendages; keel without a beak, slightly twisted towards the left.
Flower 8–9 mm long; pedicel 0.5–1 mm long, not really expanding as the pod matures; bracteoles 1 mm long, 1-nerved.
Stem glabrous or slightly pubescent (pubescence is more evident in South Africa).
Pod c. 3.5 cm × 2.5 mm, linear-cylindrical, glabrous, with a straight beak.
Peduncle 0.7–1.2 cm × 0.2–0.5 mm, glabrous; rhachis 1-noded.
Seed 2–3 × 1.5–2 mm; hilum excentric; aril excentric.
Perennial with a rootstock.
