Characteristics

Shrubs or small trees, yellow to red-brown hairy, without tendrils. Leaves alternate, pseudopinnate, deciduous; stipules minute, caducous. Inflorescences 1–2-flowered, axillary to deciduous leaves at the base of lateral branches, or arranged in terminal panicles up to 10 cm. across, reddish-brown hairy. Bracts small, acute, carinate, caducous. Flowers hermaphrodite, pedicellate. Hypanthium rather narrow, flatfish. Sepals 4, imbricate, unequal, ± persistent, 3–7-nerved. Petals 4, smaller than the sepals, 1-nerved. Corona extrastaminal, shortly tubiform, irregularly split, hairy towards the top, and provided with small club-shaped glands. Stamens 10–16; filaments pilose, inserted on an androgynophore ± 2 mm. long; anthers oblong, subdorsifixed. Gynophore ± 4.5 mm.; ovary globose, placentas 4–5, many-ovuled; styles terminal, 4(–6), free, pilose; stigmas capitate-reniform. Fruit a subglobose stipitate 4–5-valved capsule. Seeds ovoid, compressed, ± 9 mm., arillate; funicle robust; testa crustaceous, scrobiculate; embryo large, cotyledons leafy; endosperm not copious.
