Characteristics

Shrub or treelet to ± 8 m., precociously flowering; bark thick, corky with longitudinal fissures.. Young branches shortly yellow to red-brown hairy.. Leaf-blades ovate or elliptic, rarely elliptic-oblong or lanceolate, 8.5–17(–20) by 4–7.5(–9.5) cm., top acute to rounded, base broadly cuneate, rounded or ± cordate, margin dentate with bundles of hairs at apex of teeth, both surfaces (especially beneath) shortly hairy; nerves prominent especially beneath, lateral nerves 7–11 pairs, reticulation distinct especially on older leaves; petiole up to ± 5 mm., shortly hairy, with 2 glands at the top.. Inflorescences 1–2-flowered, at base of short-shoots or clustered at the top of the branches; bracts ovate, caducous, ± 5.5 by 3.5 mm.; pedicels (4–)7–18 mm., pubescent.. Sepals unequal in size, elliptic to broadly ovate (top obtuse, base rounded), up to 1.9 by 1.3 cm., hairy outside, glabrous inside.. Petals narrowly elliptic-spathulate, green-white to creamy yellow, up to 1.8 by 0.6 cm., glabrous, at base contracted into a claw ± 4 mm. long.. Corona densely pubescent, ± 3 mm. high.. Stamens 10–16; filaments filiform, pilose except towards top, 1.2 cm.; anthers oblong, 2.5–3.5 mm., minutely apiculate.. Ovary subglobose, 4–5 mm., densely pubescent; gynophore 4–5 mm.; styles ± 3 mm., stigmas ± 2.5 mm. broad; placentas 3–6-ovulate.. Old branches covered with fleshy longitudinally fissured cork, the young ones hairy, the hairs short, stiff, golden-yellow or reddish-brown.
Sepals up to 1·9 × 1·3 cm., unequal, elliptic or broadly ovate, obtuse at the apex, rounded at the base, densely sericeous outside.
Stamens 10–16, with filaments 1·2 cm. long and anthers 2·5–3·5 mm. long, elongate-oblong, with the connective minutely apiculate.
Petals up to 18 × 6 mm. with claw c. 4 mm. long, narrowly elliptic-spathulate, greenish-white or yellowish-white, glabrous.
Capsule 3·3 × 3–4 cm., rounded at the apex, contracted at the base into a stipe c. 1 cm. long, minutely pubescent.
Seeds up to 9 mm. long, included in a cup-shaped aril with serrulate margin.
Small tree or shrub up to 8 m. high producing flowers before leaves.
