Characteristics

Aquatic perennial. Leaf-blades flat; ligule a short pilose membrane. Inflorescence composed of digitate racemes, borne terminally; racemes ± flattened; internodes and pedicels thickened, clavate. Sessile spikelet flat or slightly convex across the back; callus truncate, without a pronounced central peg; lower glume coriaceous, 2-keeled, smooth except for the scabrid keels, narrowly winged above and drawn out into a long linear flattened tail; lower floret ♂, with hyaline lemma and palea; upper lemma entire and awnless. Pedicelled spikelet resembling the sessile.
