Solitary erect palm. Trunk moderate, slightly ventricose, with annular leaf scars. Leaves paripinnate, plumose; leaf sheaths tubular, forming a crownshaft. Pinnae reduplicate, irregularly arranged, divided longitudinally to base into segments, apically truncate and praemorse, green on both surfaces. Inflorescence infrafoliar, paniculate, branched to 4 orders; peduncle short; prophyll tubular, laterally keeled; peduncular bract tubular; rachis elongate, branches subtended by short, pointed bracts. Flowers spirally arranged, with triads in proximal portion, staminate flowers in distal portion. Staminate flowers symmetric, bullet-shaped; petals hard; stamens 58–75; filaments slender; anthers elongate, dorsifixed; pistillode bottleshaped, longer than stamens. Pistillate flowers ovoid. Fruit globose to ovoid, red; stigmatic remains apical; epicarp smooth; mesocarp fleshy; endocarp with thick, flat, branched fibres over an inner layer of thin horizontal fibres. Seeds ellipsoid, terete in cross section; raphe branches anastomosing; endosperm homogeneous; embryo basal. Eophyll bifid.
