Species

Pteridophytes > Polypodiales > Woodsiaceae > Woodsia

Characteristics

Stems compact, erect to ascending, with abundant persistent petiole bases of ± equal length; scales uniformly brown, lanceolate. Leaves 4.5--25 × 1.2--3.5 cm. Petiole usually brown or dark purple when mature, articulate above base at swollen node, relatively brittle and easily shattered. Blade narrowly lanceolate, usually 2-pinnate proximally, lacking glands, never viscid; rachis usually with abundant hairs and scales. Pinnae ovate-lanceolate to deltate, longer than wide, abruptly tapered to a rounded or broadly acute apex; largest pinnae with 4--9 pairs of pinnules; abaxial surface with mixture of hairs and linear-lanceolate scales, adaxial surface with multicellular hairs concentrated along midrib. Pinnules entire or crenate, rarely shallowly lobed; margins nonlustrous, thin, ciliate with multicellular hairs, lacking translucent projections. Vein tips frequently enlarged to form whitish hydathodes visible adaxially. Indusia of narrow, hairlike segments, these uniseriate throughout, composed of cells many times longer than wide, usually surpassing mature sporangia. Spores averaging 39--46 µm. 2 n = 82.
More
Plants 12-17 cm tall. Rhizomes erect or ascending, scaly; scales concolorous, brown, broadly lanceolate, ca. 4 mm, membranous, margin entire. Fronds clustered; stipe castaneous, lustrous, 3-7 cm, ca. 1 mm in diam., with long hairs and linear-lanceolate scales, articulate below middle; lamina 1-pinnate-pinnatifid, lanceolate, 8-11 × 1.3-2 cm, herbaceous, covered with articulate hairs, especially abaxially, base gradually attenuate, apex acuminate; rachis and costae with brown, linear scales and long articulate hairs; pinnae 10-20 pairs, sessile, well separated, oblique; middle pinnae largest, ovate-lanceolate, 8-11 × 4-8 mm, pinnatifid, with 3-5 pairs of lobes, apex acute; pinna lobes elliptic, basal pair largest, 2-4 mm, entire or irregularly undulate. Veins pinnate, veinlets not reaching laminar margin. Sori orbicular and attached at ends of veinlets, submarginal; indusia saucer-shaped, membranous, margin long ciliate. 2n = 78(82).
Rhizome-scales abundant, brown, concolorous, lanceolate, 4-6 × 0.7-1 mm, attenuate, denticulate, sparsely fimbriate-ciliate; lvs 5-22 cm; petiole shining brown, articulate below the middle, scaly and hirsute; blade oblong-lanceolate, 2-3.5 cm wide, slightly narrowed below, pinnate-pinnatifid, the rachis hairy and scaly; pinnae 10-16 pairs, firm, narrowly oblong, sessile, dark green, deeply pinnatifid, the (2-)4-7 pairs of segments oblong, rounded, sparingly long-ciliate, the larger ones irregularly lobed, the costae with pale, linear scales and long septate hairs; indusium a minute disk with a marginal fringe of long hairs; 2n=82. Rock-crevices, mostly on acid substrate; circumboreal, s. to B.C., Sask., nw. Io., n. Ill., O., Pa., and in the mts. to N.C. W. ×abbeae Butters is a sterile diploid hybrid with W. oregana.
