Characteristics

Corm rounded-ovoid, 1.5-2 cm long and wide, usually deeply seated, with firm black tunics. Neck often distinct, of many layers. Stem above ground 10-30 cm high, usually comparatively stout, up to ca. 5 mm thick. Leaves 3, suberect or erecto-patent-spreading, often curved, lanceolate, long-acuminate, 6-20 cm long, 0.7-3 cm wide. Spike oblong with rounded top, moderately dense, (8-)15-40-flowered, (3-)5-15 cm long, (2.5-)3-5 cm wide. Perianth white or cream-coloured, 1.5-2 cm in diam. Tube erecto-patent to almost patent, narrowly cylindrical, 8-17 mm long, 1.5-2.5 mm wide. Segments spreading, narrowly elliptic-oblong with rounded-obtuse tips, 6-7 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, faintly 5-7-veined, with a mauve-purplish, reniform or transversely oblong spot about the middle. Nectary a shallow, somewhat elevated groove. Filaments 2-3 mm long, subulate, white. Anthers oblong, 1.2-1.5 mm long, 1-1.2 mm wide, yellow. Ovary (excl. styles) 8-13 mm long, narrowly cylindrical; free styles subulate-filiform, suberect to somewhat curved, 4-7 mm long, terminated by a small capitate stigma. Capsule narrowly oblong-cylindrical, 10-15 mm long excl. styles, ca. 1.5 mm wide; persistent styles suberect, filiform-subulate, 4-8 mm long. Seeds subglobose, somewhat angular, ca. 1 mm in diam., brown, with a short protruding hilum and a minutely reticulate surface.
