Characteristics

Corm ovoid, 1-1.5 cm long, 0.5-1 cm wide, with blackish-brown tunics, often deeply seated (5-10 cm below ground). Neck usually distinct, several-layered, greyish-brown. Stem above ground 5-20 cm high. Leaves 3 (or very rarely 4), well-spaced, linear-lanceolate, attenuate, dilated basally and with a stem-sheathing portion 0.5-2 cm long; two lower leaves about equal in length or second leaf slightly longer, 6-18 cm long, 0.5-1.5 cm wide; uppermost leaf shorter, 1.5-12 cm long, 2-5 mm wide, often somewhat cuspidate. Spike cylindrical-oblong, moderately dense, (3-)5-40-flowered, 2-10 cm long, 1.5-2 cm wide. Perianth 1-1.5 cm in diam., with spreading segments, greenish white to creamy yellow. Tube cylindrical, 4.5-7 mm long. Segments linear, 4-7 mm long, 0.8-1 mm wide at the base, with obtuse-rounded tips (rarely subacute), with narrow pink or purplish-brown edges, with a purplish-brownish curved band or a kidney-shaped pale brown spot at or below the middle, above two distinctly raised nectary ridges forming a nectary groove. Filaments 1.5-2 mm long. Anthers elliptic-oblong, 0.7-0.9 mm long, ca. 0.5 mm wide, yellow or olive-green. Ovary oblong, 3-5 mm long (excl. styles), green; free styles suberect or somewhat spreading, thickish-subulate, 2-4 mm long. Capsule narrowly cylindrical or slightly conical-oblong, 6-9 mm long (excl. styles), with 3 longitudinal ridges from the sinuses between the style bases down to the base; persistent styles erect or somewhat erecto-patent, subulate, 3.5-4.5 mm long. Seeds rounded-oblong or somewhat triquetrous-angular from capsule pressure, 0.8-1 mm in diam., dark brown, smooth (in high magnification somewhat areolate).
