Characteristics

Corm globose-ovoid, 0.8-2 cm long and wide, with firm black tunics. Stem above ground 6-22 cm high. Leaves 3, erecto-patent-spreading or recurved, linear-lanceolate, 6-22 cm long, 0.5-2 cm wide, somewhat channelled, uppermost usually shorter and more cuspidate with broader base. Spike cylindrical-oblong, 3-14 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm wide, dense, 8-30-flowered. Perianth 1.2-2.5(-3) cm in diam., purple to purplish brown. Tube broadly oblong, 2-3 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, basally with short and curved lobed spurs. Segments stellately spreading, lanceolate, 6-11 mm long, 0.8-2.5 mm wide at the base, with dark purple or almost black margins, evenly tapering to a subacute tip or somewhat acuminate. Nectary a longitudinal groove above the filament base, with somewhat raised margins. Filaments 1.5-2.2 mm long, subulate, red to purple or brownish. Anthers oblong, 1-1.5 mm long, 0.7-1 mm wide, bright yellow. Ovary oblong, 1.5-2 mm long excl. styles, triquetrous, red to purple or brownish; free styles suberect, 2-3.5 mm long, subulate, red or purplish. Capsule oblong-ovoid, 4-5 mm long (excl. styles), 4-5 mm wide; persistent styles erecto-patent or suberect and flexuous, up to 5 mm long. Seeds subglobose or often somewhat angular, ca. 1 mm in diam., brown, almost smooth (surface minutely areolate in high magnification).
