Characteristics

Corm ovoid, 1-1.5(-2) cm long, 0.8-2 cm wide, with firm black tunics. Stem above ground 5-20 cm high. Leaves 3, suberect to erecto-patent or sometimes curved-spreading, narrowly lanceolate, (4-)8-20 cm long, 0.3-1 cm wide, usually much attenuate and overtopping the spike. Spike moderately to fairly dense, 8-40-flowered, (2-)4-12 cm long, 6-10 mm wide. Perianth ca. 1 cm in diam., dark mauve-reddish brown-deep red-brownish or deep purple. Tube broadly oblong, 2-3 mm long, 1.7-3 mm wide, with subcalcarate base. Segments soon spreading and finally recurved-reflexed, ovate-narrowly triangular-lanceolate, 3^t.5 mm long, 1-2.5 mm wide at the base, obtuse-subacute. Nectary a shallow or indistinct longitudinal groove above the filament base. Filaments subulate, 0.7-1.3 mm long, brown or ± purple. Anthers oblong or elliptic-oblong, 0.6-1.2 mm long, 0.5-0.8 mm wide, bright yellow. Ovary oblong, somewhat triquetrous, 2-2.5 mm long excl. styles; free styles subulate, suberect or somewhat curved, 2.5-3 mm long, brown-purple. Mature capsule and seeds not seen.
