Characteristics

Small herbaceous plants with short stem and a rosette of leaves about 5 (rarely to 20) cm long; leaf sheaths soon splitting into wiry fibres; blades V-shaped with shallow median adaxial groove, deciduous, glabrous, midvein and margins only towards the tip serrate. Flowers solitary and tiny, peduncle up to 5 (rarely 10) cm. Tepals 5-15 mm long, white, light violet, pink-mauve or (in Namibia) blue, exterior ones aristate. Stamens six, filaments 1-2 mm long, anthers 4 mm long. Style 1.5 mm long, stigma 2.5 mm long. Ovary 1.5-2.0 mm wide and 1.5 mm long. Peduncles, ovary and back of tepals with glands.
