Characteristics

Leaves petiolate; lamina 4.5–11 x 1.7–1.7 cm., narrowly oblong to elliptic, acute or more rarely obtuse or rounded to ± bluntly acuminate at the apex, narrowly cuneate to rounded or truncate at the base, membranous, dull greyish-or ± glossy green and glabrous or sparsely appressed-pubescent above, dull pale green or greyish and more densely appressed-pubescent below, with reticulate venation varying in density and prominence; petiole 4–10 mm. long, reddish to purple-black, ± pubescent or glabrous.

Petals yellow or greenish, the outer ones 1–2 (2.5) cm. long, narrowly linear or subulate, concave and c. 2.5 mm. wide at the base, golden-brown-sericeo-pubescent outside, puberulous within except at the base, the inner ones somewhat shorter and slightly narrower, shortly unguiculate, puberulous on both sides except at the base.
Fruit on a pedicel 5–8 mm. long; fruiting carpels 1–8, 1–3.7 x 0.7–1.1 (1.5) cm., 1–6-seeded, obovoid or cylindric, ± curved, apiculate or rounded at the apex, sometimes slightly constricted between the seeds when dry, glabrous, rugose, red, reticulate-striate or not, with stipes 2–9 mm. long.
Flowers solitary or 2 (3–4), fasciculate or with peduncle up to 3 mm. long, usually remaining erect; pedicels 4–8 mm. long, pubescent or glabrescent, ± slender; bracteoles 2, broadly ovate, near the flower, deciduous.
Carpels 6–8, 3 mm. long; ovary ovoid-cylindric or flattened, appressed-pilose; style twice as long as the ovary, cylindric, pilose.
Sepals 1.5–2 mm. long, triangular-ovate, obtuse or apiculate, pubescent and greenish outside, glabrous and reddish within.
Branches red to purplish-black, usually rather sparsely yellowish-fawn-pubescent at first, soon glabrous.
Seeds c. 0.8–1.1 cm. long, ellipsoid or ± flattened, orange, oblique, biseriate; aril inconspicuous.
Stamens 1 mm. long, linear, with connective prolongation capitate, rugulose.
