Species

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae > Ypsilopus

Characteristics

Plants to 150 mm tall; stems 20-30 mm tall, erect, almost round, old stems covered in grey leaf sheaths; roots borne from the base of the stem; leaves linear-lorate, to 150 x 6.5 mm, flat or conduplicate, borne in an apical fan. Inflorescences several, arising below the leaves, arching or pendent, to 120 mm long and with 2-12 small flowers in 2 ranks; bracts as brown, membranous, am-plexicaul rings to 1 mm long. Flowers star-shaped, to 10 mm in diameter; ovaries pedicellike, slender, c. 10 mm long. Sepals equal, reflexed, narrowly oblong, subacute, apiculate, 4.5 x 2 mm. Petals like sepals but slightly smaller. Lip patent, flat, ecallose, shallowly trilobed, acute, 4.5 x 3 mm; spur slender cylindrical, curved, 45 x 1 mm, with very narrow entrance. Gynostemium stout, 1.5 mm tall; pollinia 2, stipes Y-shaped; rostellum small.

Inflorescences spreading to suberect, 5–20 cm. long, laxly 4–12-flowered; rhachis somewhat fractiflex; bracts ovate-triangular, acute, 1.5–2 mm. long.. Flowers white; pedicel and ovary scabrid, 9–12 mm. long.. Dorsal sepal ovate, acute or acuminate, 5–6.5 mm. long, 3 mm. wide; lateral sepals obliquely oblong-lanceolate, acute, 5–7 mm. long, 2.3–3 mm. wide, keeled on the reverse.. Petals oblong-lanceolate, acuminate, 5–6.5 mm. long, 1.5–2 mm. wide.. Lip obscurely 3-lobed, subrhombic to lanceolate, acute, 5–6.5 mm. long, 2.3–3 mm. wide.. Spur slender, cylindrical, 3.5–5.3 cm. long.. Column ± 2 mm. long.
Plants epiphytic, up to 0.15 m high. Stems erect or pendent, woody, 20-30 mm long, old stems covered with grey leaf sheaths. Leaves linear-lorate, flat or conduplicate, 150 x 6.5 mm; borne in a fan. Inflorescence several, from below leaves, arching or pendent, up to 120 mm long, 2-12-flowered, in 2 ranks. Flowers white, star-like, 10 mm in diam. Sepals equal, reflexed, narrowly oblong, subacute, apiculate, 4.5 x 2 mm. Petals similar but smaller. Lip patent, flat, ecallose, shallowly trilobed, acute, 4.5 x 3 mm; spur slender, cylindrical, curved, 45 x 1 mm. Flowering time Apr., May.
Sepals 5–8 × 2.5–3 mm, lanceolate, acute, the margins rolled back so that they appear narrower; dorsal sepal erect, lateral sepals deflexed.
Lip more or less entire to obscurely three-lobed, 5–7 × 2.3–3 mm, rhomboid, acute; spur 3.5–6 cm long, very slender, gently incurved.
Inflorescences 1–2, arising at base of plant, suberect or arching, 5–20 cm long, fairly laxly 4–12-flowered.
Leaves 4–5, forming a fan; blades 3–15 cm × 3.5–6 mm, linear, conduplicate, somewhat recurved.
Stem short, to c. 6 cm long, usually shorter, covered with acutely pointed old leaf bases.
Flowers white, the spur greenish at tip, the pedicel and ovary sometimes salmon-pink.
Petals 5–7 × 1.5–2 mm, lanceolate, acuminate, reflexed.
Roots c. 4 mm in diameter, smooth, grey.
Column 1.5–2 mm long, anther cap brown.
Pedicel and ovary slender, 15 mm long.
