Genus

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Orchidaceae

Characteristics

Erect to pendent epiphytic monopodial herbs with short stems, less than 6 cm. long; roots from basal part of stem, not branching. Leaves arranged in a fan, linear, conduplicate or twisted at the base to lie in one plane, articulated to short persistent leaf-bases, leaving sharp acuminate points when the leaves fall. Inflorescences usually shorter than the leaves, racemose, laxly few–many-flowered; peduncle and rhachis slender, terete; bracts amplexicaul, rather small. Flowers white or pale green, with spreading segments, scabrid on outer surface and on ovary. Sepals and petals free, subsimilar. Lip entire or obscurely 3-lobed, ecallose, long-spurred at the base. Column short, terete; rostellum geniculate and recurved at base, 2-lobed, usually dilated and scutelliform at the apex; pollinia 2, subglobose; stipes solitary, slender, Y-shaped; viscidium large, reniform or oblong.
