Characteristics

Annual herb often flowering in seedling stage, 20-300 mm tall, stem initially simple, erect, soon branching from base and above, branches erect, ascending or decumbent, usually villous, hairs up to 0.4-2 mm long, acute, patent, minute glandular hairs as well, laxly leafy. Leaves: lowermost 10-45 x 1-8 mm, slightly smaller upwards and passing imperceptibly into bracts, lanceolate, ± acute, base narrowed to a petiolar part up to 1/2 total leaf length (or sometimes ± equalling blade in lowermost pair of leaves), margins ± entire to obscurely few-toothed, sparsely hairy, hairs mostly on lower margins and petiolar part, up to 0.75-2 mm long, much shorter upwards. Flowers in crowded, eventually much elongated, spikes, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx tube for (2-)3.5-5 mm, lowermost c. 7.5-30 x 1.1-5(-8) mm, smaller upwards, lanceolate, the upper ones in particular often much narrowed and strongly folded in the upper part, ± acute, usually sparsely pilose on lower half especially on margins, hairs up to 1.5-3 mm long, much shorter and sparser upwards, upper half often glabrous except on midline below, minute glandular hairs also present, rarely short fine pubescence present on lower back. Calyx (4-)5.5-9.5 mm long, anticous lip 0.75-3 mm long, posticous lip 1.25-3.5 mm long, minutely pubescent, long hairs at tips and often on posticous keels as well, up to 1-2 mm long. Corolla tube (9-)15-30 mm long (throat (0.8-1)-1.1-1.5 mm in diam.), minutely glandular-puberulous, hairs sometimes sparse, limb (4-6)-8.5-14 mm in diameter, regular, held horizontally, lobes eventually reflexed, mouth encircled by stiff acute erect hairs, lobes (1.5-2)-3.75-6 mm long, bifid, broadly Y-shaped, above white to mauve or yellow, marked with a yellow to orange or red star around mouth, glabrous. Stamens 2 (posticous pair), included, anthers (0.8-1)-1.5-2 mm long. Stigma (1-)1.5-7 mm long, exserted (except in autogamous flowers). Style (4-8)-8.8-20.5 mm. Ovary 1.75-5 x 0.75-1.2 mm. Capsules 6-9 x 2-2.5 mm. Seeds c. 0.5-0.75 x 0.3-0.5 mm, pale mauve-grey, irregularly wrinkled, obscurely angled, angles marked by very narrow pallid wings, sometimes wanting.
