Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 15-150 mm tall, simple or with 2-3 branches from the base, these ascending or decumbent, simple or with a pair of branches, pubescent with patent acute hairs up to 0.3-0.8 mm long, more or less minutely glandular as well. Leaves few, usually only the radical pair and one other, blade 2-12 x 2-6 mm, tapering into a flat petiolar part 2-11 mm long (roughly as long as the blade or occasionally shorter in the upper leaves), ovate to elliptic, subacute, margins entire to very obscurely toothed, both surfaces pubescent, hairs acute, longest on margins, particularly of petiolar part, up to 1-2 mm long. Flowers up to c. 20, at first crowded in a head, elongating into a spike in fruit, open in sunshine. Bracts adnate to calyx for 2-4 mm, lowermost c. 7-15 x 3-6 mm, smaller upwards, elliptic to ovate in upper part, contracting into a broad shaft, pubescent on both surfaces, hairs all acute, those on backs of bracts up to 0.8-1.2 mm long, up to 1.5-2 mm on margins. Calyx 4.2-6 mm long, lips 1-1.5 mm long, pubescent with acute hairs up to 1 mm long. Corolla tube 11-15 mm long (throat 0.8-1.3 mm in diam.), minutely glandular-puberulous (hairs up to 0.1 mm long), limb 8-10 mm in diam., regular, mouth encircled by long acute erect hairs, lobes eventually reflexed, 3.5-4 x 2.5-4 mm, Y-shaped, bifid, pale to deep mauve above, deep red below, deep yellow star-shaped patch around mouth, the rays extending well up shaft of lobe, sometimes with a small crimson blotch at the base of each lobe. Stamens 4, posticous pair included, anthers 1-1.4 mm long, anticous anthers well exserted, 0.4-0.7 mm long. Stigma 0.6-2 mm long, exserted. Style c. 8.4-9 mm long. Ovary c. 1.5 x 0.8 mm. Capsules 5-6 x 2.4-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm, pale amber colour, strongly colliculate, obscurely angled, angles ± marked by very narrow pallid wings. Flowers between July and September, being well on into fruit in October.
