Characteristics

Annual herb, primary stem 20-330 mm tall, erect, simple to well branched from the base and above, glandular-puberulous, also ± villous with patent acute hairs up to 1-2 mm long, these hairs occasionally sparse, leafy; often with axillary leaf tufts (incipient branches). Leaves (primary ones) c. 5-35 x 1-6 mm, broadly to narrowly elliptic, subacute, base narrowed to a petiolar part, particularly in lowermost leaves, margins entire to obscurely dentate, glandular puberulous all over, thinly villous as well (or hairs occasionally sparse), hairs up to 1-2 mm long. Flowers open in sunshine, many in a terminal spike, crowded at first, becoming lax and spike greatly elongated in fruit. Bracts adnate to calyx for 3-4.5 mm, lowermost 10-27 x 2-5(-10) mm, lanceolate, entire or occasionally obscurely toothed, glandular-puberulous, villous as well with acute hairs up to 1.5-2.5 mm long. Calyx (5-)6-8 mm long, lips 1.5-3 mm long, glandular-puberulous, villous as well with acute hairs up to 1-1.5 mm long. Corolla tube (9-)14-20 mm long (throat 0.8-1.4 mm in diam., scarcely wider than tube), glandular-puberulous, hairs sometimes sparse, or rarely up to 0.2 mm long, limb 4-8.25 mm in diam., almost regular, mouth sparsely bearded or glabrous, lobes 1.5-3.5 x 1.2-2 mm, broadly elliptic, variously recorded as white, cream, creamy-yellow, yellow and pale lemon yellow, deeper yellow/orange in throat radiating out as a star-shaped 'eye', backs of lobes once recorded as maroon. Stamens 1 (anticous pair), anthers 0.8-2.3 mm long, included to shortly exserted. Stigma c. 2-6 mm long, included to shortly exserted. Style c. 6.5-15 mm long. Ovary c. 2.5-3.5 x 1 mm. Capsules c. 5-7 x 2.5-3 mm. Seeds c. 0.6-1 x 0.4-0.6 mm, obscurely angled, colliculate, pallid. Flowering between June and August, after early rains.
